The Taiping Rebellion (1850-1864)

The Taiping Rebellion was one of the largest and deadliest conflicts in Chinese history. It began in 1850 when a man named Hong Xiuquan claimed that he was the brother of Jesus Christ. He believed that he was chosen by God to create a new kingdom in China. Hong gathered followers who were unhappy with the ruling Qing Dynasty, and together they started a rebellion.

The Taiping forces grew quickly and took control of large parts of southern China. They wanted to change many things, including land distribution and the role of women in society. The rebellion lasted for 14 years and caused great destruction across China. Millions of people died due to fighting, hunger, and disease.

Finally, in 1864, the Qing Dynasty, with help from foreign countries, was able to defeat the Taiping forces. The rebellion ended, but it left China weak and damaged. The Taiping Rebellion is remembered as one of the bloodiest civil wars in history, with an estimated 20 to 30 million people losing their lives.
